COMMUNICATIONS CENTER The Island of Martha's Vineyard is located just south of Cape Cod. The main island and the Elizabeth Island chain (to the west) are known as Dukes County. There are (7) communities within this county. Each community has its own fire and police department. There is a regional communications center, located at 10 Hanger Road, at the Martha's Vineyard Airport. The communications center, operated by the Dukes County Sheriff's Department, serves as the island's 911 PSAP and all Island public safety radio communications are controlled from here. Fire communications were once all conducted on 33.76 mhz (tone 114.8). A number of years ago, a paging channel was added. All communications were then dispatched initially on 154.325 mhz (tone 91.5) and operations were conducted on 33.76. Just recently, the island departments have aquired a number of VHF frequencies for fire operations, getting away from 33.76 for the most part. At this time the frequencies are apparantly in place and some communications have been monitored, although the full details of the system are still unknown. Vineyard apparatus are numbered by department and apparatus type in an easy to remember system. Police units are designated by the first letter of their community... (Charlie for Chilmark, Echo for Edgartown, Tango for Tisbury, etc...). EMS units have similar designations as police...C-90, E-90, etc... DISPATCH CENTER CALL SIGNS Fire
